There are so many people who seem to think that those for whom this is the most special moment in history are African-Americans. I don't think they understand how a lot of us white people have felt all these years, knowing that Black people haven't been getting an even break, but not knowing what to do about it. Deep in our psyches, a lot of us white people have been suffering too, aware all the time on some subliminal level that we were living a privileged life we didn't deserve, a gift that came to us through the accident of birth, and not liking that one bit. For people like me, this is our time too: our time to be happy without reservation about the fact that the right thing has happened at last.
I have told a lot of people that Barack Obama being elected President is the best thing that has ever happened to me in my entire life, and I really mean that. It eclipses every other good thing I have ever experienced, or probably ever will experience. This is OUR moment, our American moment... finally, we are one.
